Clubs and Activities

There is a range of activities here at The Hollins.  We offer these via our core curriculum to ensure that as many pupils as possible can take part.

We also have a number of other opportunities available in school including Duke of Edinburgh and “Let’s Be”.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme is very much aligned to our 7 values: resilience, responsibility, kind, honest, aspiration, reflective and respectful  – just some of the skills young people get through their DofE that help them in life and improve their chances of moving forward in education or getting a job. The DofE experience aims to transform young people’s lives. A DofE Award can be a game-changer, raising young people’s aspirations and opening doors to employment whilst bringing together our school community.

The National Citizenship Service

The National Citizenship Service has a programme of activities that Year 11 students can sign up to in the summer after their GCSE examinations. It involves away from home experiences, local community activities and an online programme all boosting resilience, independence and employability skills.

Instrumental Lessons

There are many benefits of learning to play a musical instrument and recent studies have reported that the correlation between musical training and academic success is astounding; learning to play an instrument improves functions like memory and abstract reasoning skills – essential for maths and science.  In addition to improving academic, physical and social skills, refines discipline and patience, and boosting self-esteem and self-expression.  At The Hollins it also opens up many opportunities for students to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities.

The school currently offers  lessons in:

  • Piano
  • Singing
  • Violin
  • Guitar (including ukulele and bass guitar)
  • Drums

Competitions

Staff and pupils always take advantage of any opportunities to showcase the talents of The Hollins.  In November 2023 the English department organised entries to the Amazing Accrington Winter Writing Trail competition run in conjunction with Julie Hesmondhalgh and 6 of the 7 secondary winners were from The Hollins!

Our winners have been lucky enough to have an amazing group of actors record their words. Ezra’s work “This is Winter” has been recorded by actor Toby Jones, Ismaels’ “My Winter Poem” by Muzz Khan, “Winter Skies” by Abiyya is recorded by Mina Anwar, Natalia’s “The Heart of Winter’s Grip” by Suranne Jones and “I am the Snow” by Elias is read by Coronation Street’s Joe Duttine. Finally, Aaye’s “The Wind and I” is performed by Jason Watkins.

We are sure you will agree that our student’s work is fantastic. To hear the recordings visit here
